Ruby, Darcy and Tan, the three journalists/editors of our 2024 Bee magazine, interviewed some of our teachers to find out what their own learning journey has been like so far. Not only students learn every day at school! Teachers do too!
As being ethical in our way of thinking and doing represents a very important value at our Buddhist school and because our students are aspiring to become ecologically literate, our teachers teach to not only learn ABOUT Nature but also FROM nature.
Students learn that during its 3.8 billion years of existence, Nature on Earth has developed amazing survival skills while staying sustainable in its successive processes of adaptation, transformation and growth.
Through our HNBC curriculum, our students understand and experience that Nature is a prolific source of knowledge. It is why they learn to meticulously observe Nature to be able to copy the forms and functions it creates endlessly in a sustainable manner. This way of observing and copying Nature is called biomimicry science. However, our students look for Nature’s knowledge not only in science. Whatever they study in the curriculum, they go extra steps beyond the topic studied by always wondering: “How Nature solves this problem?” At Hoa Nghiem, biomimicry has also become a thinking process that our students activate in all areas of their learning.
For the curriculum to be alive and blossing, we live and breath in our school values. We go as a river and have a school spirit, that results in pedagological believes of our daily teaching and learning at Hoa Nghiem. In every learning areas, teachers expose students to both explicit teaching and through inquiry base learning depending on the needs of their learning experiences. Teachers challenge students to think not only within the different subjects taught but also between, across and beyond the disciplines of the curriculum to make them contribute in solving real life problems. For example, students collaborated with zookeepers at Melbourne Zoo to design and create enrichment tools and activities for meerkats, lemurs and hippopotamus living in captivity. Students also designed a floating village that could help people living in Tuvalu Island survive when their island will be totally immersed by the rising of the ocean. This way of thinking, designing and acting by providing solutions is called a transdisciplinary approach to learning. The purpose of this process is to find ethical solutions for all living beings on Earth.
HNBC is dedicated to build upon its strong community relationships, positive student achievements and seeking out new knowledge to further support the thinking skills and creativity of its learning community. In partnership with our community, HNBC teachers will continually strive to provide our students the means and motivation to have a strong mind and a good heart as well as being responsible global citizens leading us into a sustainable future.
HNBC is a Child Safe organisation with a demonstrated commitment to the safety and wellbeing of children, with a zero-tolerance approach to the abuse of children in our care. All employees are required to go through a reference and qualifications checking process prior to any appointment. Completion of regular Child Safeguarding and other related training is mandatory for continued employment.
